Korean Course Enrolment Instructions

EAS110Y1Y Modern Standard Korean I/ EAS211Y1 Accelerated Modern Standard Korean I & II
Please enrol or add yourself to the waitlist for EAS110Y1 or EAS211Y1 via ACORN. Please refer to the Arts & Science Timetable for the date the course will become available for enrolment on ACORN. You must also submit an online EAS110Y1 Screening Form or EAS211Y1 Screening Form. The form must be submitted within 48 hours after you enrol in the course on ACORN. Failure to submit the mandatory form will result in removal from the course.

Students must attend a mandatory interview during the first week of classes.  They must also attend the first lecture and all tutorials in the first week. The department will remove students who do not fill out the screening form or miss the interview, as will students who have a background in the language.

**Please note that repeating Korean language courses is not allowed in cases where students have completed over one-third of the total class hours in a previous year. If this applies to you, you must take the Korean Placement Test to attempt to proceed to the next level.**

Fall-Winter 2024-2025

 Step 2: Complete the online EAS110Y1 Screening Form/ EAS211Y1 Screening Form. The form must be submitted within 48 hours after you enrol in the course on ACORN. Failure to submit the mandatory form will result in removal from the course.

 Students must attend a mandatory interview that will take place during the first week of classes. Attendance at the first lecture and all tutorials in the first week is mandatory. Students who do not fill in the screening form or miss the interviews will be removed from the class by the department, as will students with a background in the language.

Students with any background who might qualify for an upper-year course must attend a placement interview/test and receive a placement prior to enrolment. See placement test/interview details below. Being placed in a course does not guarantee you a spot in the course. Please note that native speakers of Korean and some students with a prior linguistic background in Korean are not permitted to take Korean courses for credit. Please read the program policy to find out if you are qualified for a course.

After you have received a course placement (or if you have the minimum grade in the prerequisite), please check the Arts & Science Timetable to see when you can enroll in the course in which you have been placed.  *Please note that repeating Korean language courses is not allowed in cases where students have completed over one-third of the total class hours in a previous year. *Students who want enrol in foundation-level courses (EAS110Y1Y or EAS211Y1Y) do not need placement interviews.  They will have screening interviews at the first class of the course.

* Students with prerequisites (pass marks with lower levels within two years) do not need placement interviews.

Please note that some students interviewed will also be required to write a placement test.

Placement Interviews for Incoming and Returning Students with background (informal or formal study of Korean)

  • Korean August 2024 Placement Interview: Thursday, August 22 (2 pm - 3 pm EST), on Zoom (Upon registration for the placement interview, the EAS Korean Language Coordinator will send you your specific interview time.)
  • Please submit the Korean August 2024 Placement Interview Registration Form 
  • Registration Deadline: August 11, 2024

Graduate Students

Graduate students from within and outside the department who need knowledge of Korean for their research may take a Korean course with the approval of EAS. To request enrollment, please submit the Language Course Enrolment Request Form for graduate students and register for the placement interview. If placed in a course, you will be enrolled in a graduate course code, though the credit does not normally count towards graduate programs. The course is graded as credit/non-credit (CR/NCR); 70% or above is required for a CR. Auditing is not an option.
