Chu Wang is a PhD candidate in the Department of East Asian Studies at the University of Toronto. His research interests include East Asian cinema and media culture, environmental humanities, and science and technology studies. His dissertation investigates nature-themed science education filmmaking during Mao-era China. Shifting the analytical focus from representations to practices, his research views science education filmmaking as a multifaceted practice entangled with concurrent scientific experiments, the invention of local filming technologies, interactions with the more-than-human world, and evolving political and social conditions. Utilizing extensive archival documents, his dissertation will reconstruct these intricate filming processes and reveal their unique meanings beyond film texts.
